When my husband and I first decided to leave London behind for the back-packing life we came up with a few suggestions and did a little bit of research on places we wanted to go to first. Barcelona and Lisbon were obvious choices and we started off there, but our third destination was somewhere that would never have crossed my mind as a travel or holiday destination. This place was Skoje in Macedonia and I am so happy that we spent a month in this beautiful, tourist-free city.
Skopje is Macedonia's capital city. Known for being the birth place of Mother Teresa, the city is also home to the Old Bazaar- the biggest preserved bazaar in the Balkans, Kale Fortress, many historical and cultural monuments and breath-taking Matka Canyon.
Skopje is not on everyone's bucket list but it definitely should be. For a rich historical adventure, beautiful nature, friendly locals and great, cheap food and drink (£2 cocktails? yes please) this charming, underrated city is the perfect destination.
My words cannot do this wonderful place justice, so here are 20 photos to inspire you to make Skopje your next exciting adventure.
Have you ever been to Skopje or wanted to go? where is your next adventure taking place? Let me know in the comments.
